Roofing sheet screws come loose when the connection loses clamp force or thread grip. Common causes include shallow or stripped thread engagement, incorrect driving depth, restrained thermal movement, repeated wind loading and a weakened purlin or deck. A damaged washer can also cause a leak even when the screw remains tight.
The correct repair depends on which interface failed. Tightening every screw may strip the support, crush the roofing profile or hide an elongated hole without stopping the movement that caused it.
What does a loose roofing screw actually mean?
A raised screw head is a symptom, not a complete diagnosis. The visible condition may represent one of four different failures:
- Back-out: the screw has moved upward but may still have some thread grip.
- Pull-out or strip-out: the screw threads no longer hold the support correctly.
- Pull-over: uplift has drawn the roofing sheet over the screw head or washer while the screw remains in the support.
- Seal loss: the washer has cracked, shifted or lost compression, although the screw may still resist load.
These conditions can look similar from a distance. They need different corrective actions, so inspection must include the screw, шайба, sheet hole and support.
Why do roofing sheet screws come loose?
Incorrect driving changes the connection from the first day

If a fixing hole is too tight, off-center or already distorted, the moving sheet can bear against the screw shank. Repeated bearing may enlarge the hole, bend a washer or transfer cyclic force into the support connection.
Thermal movement does not literally unscrew every fastener. It often changes the hole, washer contact or clamp condition first. The raised head appears later because the connection has already lost effective restraint.
Wind cycling exposes weak attachment
Wind can pull upward on the sheet and then release it. This repeating load makes unsupported movement more important, especially near roof edges, corners and other high-pressure zones. If several fasteners loosen in one area, the problem may involve fixing pattern, support spacing or local wind pressure rather than isolated workmanship.
A replacement screw cannot correct an attachment layout that does not match the profile and design load.
The support may lose its grip
A roofing screw holds only as well as the material engaged by its threads. Thin steel can strip during overdriving. Timber can split, soften or lose local strength after moisture damage. Corroded steel, a missed purlin or insufficient penetration also reduces withdrawal resistance.
If the screw turns without becoming secure, stop driving it. Additional rotation usually removes more support material rather than restoring grip.
The washer can fail before the screw
A sealing washer has a weatherproofing job and a load-spreading job. Uneven compression, aging, chemical exposure or movement can damage the seal. A cracked washer does not prove that the screw has pulled out, while a tight-looking cap does not prove that the hidden washer and hole remain sound.

How should a loose fastener be diagnosed?

Inspection should also compare affected fasteners with undamaged fasteners on the same profile and support. A repeated pattern usually reveals more than one isolated screw.

When is retightening enough?
Retightening may be appropriate when the screw was only underdriven and inspection confirms an intact sheet hole, sound support, compatible washer and correct fastener. The screw still needs the seating condition specified for that exact roofing system.
Retightening is not enough when the screw spins, the hole has elongated, the sheet has cracked, the washer has failed or the support has deteriorated. These conditions require repair or replacement of the failed component.
Moving a screw to a new position or increasing its diameter changes the connection. A larger screw may restore grip in one verified repair detail, but it may also enlarge the sheet hole, reduce movement clearance or exceed the washer geometry. It is not a universal solution.
How do HESU roofing profiles affect the fixing detail?

Inspect loose screws without creating a roof-access hazard
