For a one-sided polycarbonate roofing sheet, the clearly marked UV-protected face must point outward toward the sun. Manufacturers usually identify that face on printed masking film, an adhesive label or an edge mark. Some products protect both faces, so the current product label and technical sheet remain the controlling instructions.
This sounds like a one-step check. In practice, sheets pass through unpacking, measuring, taglio, drilling and staging before they reach the roof. The protected face must keep its identity through every stage. A correct mark on the original sheet cannot prevent reverse installation after an unmarked offcut enters the work area.
The UV layer, masking film and sheet color are three different things
The UV-protective layer belongs to the sheet. Manufacturers commonly add it during sheet production as a thin co-extruded surface layer. It protects the polycarbonate from the degrading effects of long outdoor UV exposure.
The removable film has a different job. It limits scratches and carries handling or orientation information. Peeling off that film does not remove the permanent UV layer, but it may remove the easiest way to identify the protected face.
Color does not provide a universal answer. Chiaro, opale, bronzo, blue or textured panels may use one-sided or two-sided protection. Gloss also varies with tooling and finish. Start with the manufacturer’s mark, not a guess

Check the product release when both films look alike. The release should identify the product, batch, surface treatment and marking method. It should also state whether the sheet has protection on one face or both.
Place all sheets in the staging area with the marked face in the same direction. This simple arrangement makes a reversed panel visible before fastening begins. It also reduces mistakes when transparent sheets appear nearly identical from either side.

Cutting is where correct orientation often loses its identity
A full sheet may carry one label near an edge. A cut can leave that label on one piece while the other piece becomes anonymous. Removing film before measuring creates the same problem.
Use a three-part identity rule before cutting:
- Mark the exterior face near every planned piece, outside the finished visible area.
- Keep all arrows pointing in one declared direction on the cutting sketch and workbench.
- Transfer the product or batch reference when several similar clear sheets share the bench.
The mark should survive until the installer fixes the piece in its final orientation. A removable label on the weather face works better than a memory-based instruction. It also helps another person continue the work without reconstructing the sheet’s history.
This control does not change the correct method for cutting plastic. It only preserves surface identity while that work occurs. The tools, support and feed rate still follow the current sheet guide.

Which side of polycarbonate roofing faces the sun after the mark is lost?
Stop and identify the product before installation. Match the piece to its bundle, edge printing, cutting plan or retained labelled offcut. The supplier’s batch record or technical sheet may define another approved identification method.
Do not infer the UV face from tint, surface shine or the direction in which the panel bends. Those features do not create a reliable rule across products. An improvised test may also damage the surface or produce an ambiguous result.
If the product identity cannot be restored, the installation team cannot confirm correct orientation. Two-sided UV protection changes the orientation rule

That final clause matters. A sheet may combine UV protection with an anti-condensation surface, a printed finish or another one-sided function. A product can therefore have two UV-protected faces but still require one installation orientation.
Use the exact product code rather than the broad word “polycarbonate.” One-sided and two-sided sheets can look similar after crews remove the film. The release document must preserve the distinction.
Weather-face direction and profile direction are separate checks
The protected face points toward the weather. The corrugations or internal channels follow the roof geometry. These instructions solve different problems.

Record the installed face before the final film disappears. A completion photograph that shows the label, roof position and sheet reference creates a useful handover record. It cannot replace product documentation, but it confirms that the installation team followed the declared orientation.
UV orientation does not make a rooflight safe to stand on
Surface protection and load safety are unrelated. A panel can face the correct direction and still fail under a person’s weight. Treat rooflights and sheeted roofs as fragile unless a competent assessment confirms otherwise.

The factory-to-roof record should name the weather face
A dependable release carries one fact through the entire process: which surface faces outside. The factory label identifies the protected face and product code. The bundle label repeats it. The cutting plan transfers it to each piece. The installation record confirms it before film removal.
This chain also exposes errors early. A piece without an arrow becomes a visible exception at the bench, not a hidden defect on the roof. A two-sided product remains distinguishable from a one-sided product even when both look clear.
The direct answer never changes for a one-sided sheet: place the marked UV-protected face toward the sun. The higher-quality practice is to keep that answer attached to every piece until the roof is complete.
