Per calcolare la quantità di lastre di copertura, divide each roof plane’s eave width by the sheet’s effective cover width and round up. Then calculate how many sheet rows must cover the slope. Multiply runs by rows for each plane, round each plane separately, and add only the waste or spare allowance justified by the roof shape.
The controlling dimensions are installed cover width across the roof and usable sheet length up the slope. Dividing roof area by a sheet’s nominal area ignores side laps, fine giri, and whole-sheet boundaries. Use area only as a final cross-check.
Measurements needed before calculating roofing sheets
| Input | Symbol | How it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Eave width of each roof plane | W | Determines the number of sheet runs across that plane. |
| Slope length from ridge detail to eave edge | S | Determines the required installed length of each run. |
| Effective cover width | C | Gives the installed width after the designed side lap. |
| Available or selected sheet length | L | Determines whether one sheet or several rows cover the slope. |
| Designed end lap | E | Reduces the usable length where two rows meet. |
| Cresta, anca, verge, valle, and wall-junction lengths | Various | Controls linear accessory quantities. |
Use one unit throughout each equation. If the roof dimensions use metres and the cover width uses millimetres, convert one before dividing. Measure every roof plane independently. A gable roof normally has two planes; fianchi, valli, abbaini, tettoie, and intersecting roofs create additional calculation zones.
Where possible, take dimensions from confirmed drawings or ground-level references. Do not treat installed sheets as a measuring platform. The UK Health and Safety Executive advises avoiding work on or near fragile roof surfaces where possible and controlling any remaining access risk.

Calculate sheet runs from effective cover width
La larghezza nominale è l'intera larghezza di un foglio sciolto. Effective cover width is the roof width that remains after the next sheet forms its designed side lap. The profile data, not a generic overlap percentage, supplies this value.
Sheet runs across one roof plane = ceiling(W / C)
The ceiling function means round upward to the next whole sheet. Calculate each plane before adding the results. Rounding after several planes are combined can hide a partial sheet at an edge.
Ondulato, trapezoidale, and tile profiles do not share one cover width. UN tegola in plastica can also require the tile steps and course alignment to match across the plane. Use the effective cover stated for the exact profile and lap arrangement.

Calculate rows when one sheet cannot cover the slope
If one custom-length sheet covers the full designed slope length, the number of rows is one. If stock lengths require several rows, each joint consumes an end lap. A run made from n sheets contains n sheet lengths but only n minus one end laps.
Installed length from n rows = nL – (n – 1)E
Rearranging that relationship gives the minimum row count:
Rows up the slope = max(1, ceiling((S – E) / (L – E)))
For a positive slope length, max(1, …) means use at least one row. This formula assumes every sheet has the same length and every joint uses the same designed end lap. It also requires L to be greater than E. For mixed sheet lengths, lay out each run directly instead of forcing it into this equation.
End lap is not a universal number. Profile geometry, materiale, pendenza del tetto, weather exposure, support position, and the manufacturer’s instructions can change it. IL Guida all'installazione della copertura in PVC covers the installation mechanics that sit behind this calculation input.
Worked example 1: a full-length gable roof
Consider a gable roof with two equal planes. Ogni piano misura 12.4 m along the eave and requires 5.8 m of installed sheet length. The selected profile has an effective cover width of 1.05 M. One produced sheet covers the full slope, so each run has one row.
| Calcolo | Risultato |
|---|---|
| Runs per plane | ceiling(12.4 / 1.05) = 12 |
| Rows per run | 1 |
| Sheets per plane | 12 X 1 = 12 |
| Two roof planes | 12 + 12 = 24 base sheets |
The base layout therefore uses 24 fogli interi. The production length still needs the approved ridge detail, proiezione di grondaia, and cutting tolerance. Those length allowances do not change the number of runs across the roof.
Worked example 2: a roof made from stock-length rows
Now consider one roof plane that is 10.8 m wide and 8.4 m long on the slope. The effective cover width is 0.90 M. Available sheets are 3.0 m long, and the project detail defines a 0.15 m end lap.
| Calcolo | Risultato |
|---|---|
| Runs across | ceiling(10.8 / 0.90) = 12 |
| Rows up slope | ceiling((8.4 – 0.15) / (3.0 – 0.15)) = 3 |
| Installed length from three rows | (3 X 3.0) – (2 X 0.15) = 8.70 M |
| Base sheet quantity | 12 X 3 = 36 sheets |
IL 8.70 m installed length exceeds the required 8.40 m by 0.30 M. That remainder must be resolved in the eave, cresta, cut, or sheet-length plan. It is not automatically reusable waste.
How much roofing-sheet waste should be added?
Waste belongs after the geometric calculation. A percentage cannot correct the wrong cover width, a missed roof plane, or an incorrect row count. First calculate the base layout, then identify where cutting and handling can consume material.
| Roof condition | First-pass planning allowance | Main source of loss |
|---|---|---|
| Simple rectangular or gable planes with custom lengths | Di 3-5% | Edge trimming, isolated damage, and limited spare material. |
| Several penetrations, stepped areas, or stock-length rows | Di 5-10% | More joints, local cuts, and offcuts that cannot move between runs. |
| Hip, valle, dormer, or intersecting roof geometry | Di 10-15% | Diagonal cuts, handed offcuts, giunzioni, and irregular plane boundaries. |
These ranges are illustrative budgeting assumptions, not measured HESU waste rates or product specifications. A cut layout can justify a lower or higher figure. Keep cutting waste, indennità per danni al sito, and future maintenance spares as separate lines so the final quantity remains auditable.
Planned sheet quantity = ceiling(base sheet quantity x (1 + selected allowance))
For the 24-sheet gable example, UN 5% preliminary allowance gives ceiling(24 X 1.05) = 26 sheets. Record 24 as the geometric requirement and two as the added allowance. Do not report only the combined total.
Calculate ridge and flashing pieces separately
Cappucci di cresta, barge pieces, and straight flashings use linear coverage. If each piece has length RL and adjacent pieces overlap by RO, the first piece contributes its full length and each later piece contributes RL minus RO.
Accessory pieces = max(1, ceiling((required line length – RO) / (RL – RO)))
Use this formula for a positive line length, with piece length greater than overlap. Calculate each continuous ridge, anca, verge, or wall junction separately. Valleys and penetrations need their own details because junction cuts and drainage direction can prevent offcuts from being reused.
Do not estimate fasteners from roof area alone. Use the approved fixing schedule for the exact sheet profile, disposizione degli arcarecci, edge zone, and wind design. UN Lastra di copertura in UPVC layout should therefore carry its profile name, copertura efficace, disposizione di sostegno, and fastener schedule into the quantity record.
Reconcile the result before releasing production lengths
Run three checks before the estimate becomes a production list:
- Width check: sheet runs multiplied by effective cover must reach or exceed the width of each individual roof plane.
- Length check: nL minus n-1 end laps must reach the required slope length for every run.
- Area check: installed effective coverage should be reasonably close to the measured roof-plane area after boundary rounding and designed laps. A large difference signals a missing plane, unit error, or wrong profile dimension.
The final record should show the roof-plane identifier, larghezza della grondaia, lunghezza della pendenza, profilo, nominal width, copertura efficace, lunghezza del foglio, fine giro, corre, rows, base sheets, cut allowance, pezzi di ricambio del progetto, and accessory quantities. This record preserves the calculation from roof drawing through profile confirmation, production length, imballaggio, e installazione.
